Earlier approvals granted by the federal government for gender-transitioning drugs should be withdrawn, according to Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN). His proposal came in light of the shooting perpetrated by transgender shooter Audrey Hale in March of this year.
“I think it certainly warrants some sort of investigation and/or hearing into the matter. These are powerful drugs; they have side effects that can clearly be dangerous, if not deadly,” he told the Epoch Times in an interview.
“I think it does call into question whether or not these drugs should be on the market, and certainly – consideration of the question of ‘Should there be further guidance, warnings and stipulations given as to when they are administered or prescribed?'”
Three children and three adults were killed during the shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville, part of the congressional district Ogles represents. It also raised concerns about both the safety of gender-transitioning procedures and the responsibility of medical professionals involved in “affirming” Hale’s chosen identity.
The Epoch Times noted that Hale had been taking these gender-transitioning drugs, which are typically used for those diagnosed with “gender dysphoria” – a mental condition where a person identifies with the gender opposite of the one they are born as. Given the potency of these drugs, it is possible that she was under the influence of these medications as she shot up the Nashville school. Independent journalist Abigail Shrier wrote in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal: “The standard for dealing with teens who assert they are transgender is ‘affirmative care’ – immediately granting the patient’s stated identity.”
But instead of prescribing dangerous medications that cause long-term consequences for their psychological and social well-being – such as in the case of Hale – she wrote that medical professionals ought to be helping gender-confused teens to overcome their unhealthy urges.
The Tennessee congressman also told the Epoch Times that authorities should make Hale’s manifesto, journals and other writings public. These documents written before the shooting would help give clarity to her state of mind prior to the shooting, he added. These are currently in the possession of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD), which earlier declined to publicize the documents.
“We’re at this point where it is time for them to release [Hale’s] manifesto. Part of that is they owe it to the families, the community and … the nation. So it is imperative from a trust and accountability issue that [the MNPD] release the manifesto and they do it immediately,” said Ogles.
“The manifesto is going to show that the woman was deeply troubled. It’s going to bring into question whether or not she should have been transitioning, and it’s going to bring into question the culpability of the doctors and the clinicians involved in feeding her psychosis.”
Ogles also denounced efforts by the Left to paint Hale in a positive light. He said in a March 30 statement: “In the wake of the Covenant School shooting, there has been a movement by radical leftists to … legitimize the actions of the shooter because she identified as transgender. Make no mistake – she was a domestic terrorist who sought to kill and destroy.”
