The Swedish government has asked the country’s military to intervene to help police fight a surge in migrant gang crime, following a sharp increase in deadly shootings and bomb attacks.
Sweden’s conservative prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, said after a meeting on Friday, Sept. 29, with the head of the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Police Authority that he is exploring “how the armed forces can help police in their work against criminal gangs.”
He will also look to change the law to allow the armed forces to provide even more domestic assistance when called upon. (Related: 60% of recipients of Sweden’s unemployment benefits are IMMIGRANTS, and slightly under half are of non-European origin.)
“I cannot emphasize enough how serious the situation is,” said Kristersson in a televised address to the nation on Thursday, Sept. 28. “Sweden has never seen anything like it before. No other country in Europe sees anything like it currently.”
On the same day Kristersson made his address, a woman in her 20s was killed when a bomb tore through a house in the city of Uppsala, 40 miles north of the capital of Stockholm. A day before, two people were killed in separate shooting incidents in the capital city.
“This is a difficult time for Sweden,” said Kristersson.” A 25-year-old woman went to bed last night on a completely ordinary evening but never got to wake up.”
“We will hunt the gangs, we will defeat the gangs,” he added.
National Police Commissioner Anders Thornberg clarified that the military will not be given “direct” policing tasks. However, the specific arrangement for the military is still being drawn up by the government.
“The criminal conflicts in Sweden are a serious threat to the safety and security of the country,” said Thornberg. “Innocents are murdered and injured. We are doing everything we can within the police and together with others to stop the development.”
Kristersson’s conservative party, the Moderate Party, won the election in Sweden last year, forming a conservative government with the help of the conservative and anti-immigrant party, Sweden Democrats, ending eight years of left-wing rule by the Social Democratic Party.
Kristersson’s Moderates won the election in part due to a promise to stem growing gang violence in the country, which his party has blamed on Sweden’s very liberal immigration and integration policies.
“It is a political naivete and cluelessness that has brought us here,” said the prime minister. “It is an irresponsible immigration policy and a failed integration that has brought us here. Social exclusion and parallel societies feed the criminal gangs. There they can ruthlessly recruit children and train them as future killers.”
For decades before Kristersson’s premiership, Sweden’s immigration policies led to the country taking in more immigrants per capita than any other European nation, especially during the 2015 migration crisis. It has resulted in about 20 percent of Sweden’s 10.5 million residents being born abroad.
In addition to reforming the country’s immigration laws to massively curtail the number of foreigners entering the country, Kristersson noted that the country’s criminal codes also need to be fixed to counter the ability of gangs to recruit young people. Kristersson said he believes there is enough support in parliament for reform.
The Social Democrats, the main left-wing opposition, has already voiced its support for change. Party leader and former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has already supported the call to allow the military to help stop gang violence.
“This is not Sweden, this is not how Sweden is supposed to be,” Andersson said.
These massive changes come as more than 60 people in Sweden died last year due to gang-related shootings, the highest figure on record. The number of gang-related deaths this year is on track to be the same or worse.
The Swedish police estimate that about 30,000 people in the country are directly involved with or have ties to gang violence. The recent surge in violence has been attributed to feuds between rival factions of criminal gangs who have brought their conflict to Sweden through migrant communities in the country.
